"Cosmic Variance"

“  magnificent mathematical garb which fascinates, dazzles and makes people blind to the underlying errors. The theory is like a beggar clothed in purple whom ignorant people take for a king..., its exponents are brilliant men but they are metaphysicists rather than scientists... " New York Herald Tribune, September 11, 1932 Nikola Tesla.

Deleted From "Not even Wrong"

This was deleted from the comment from here - http://www.math.columbia.edu/~woit/wordpress/?p=664#comment-35983

So I decided to post it here for all to see.

" Once upon a time, there was ... 'A king!' my little readers will say right away. No, children, you are wrong. Once upon a time there was a piece of wood.... "
Come on... Give over, M theory is Pinocchio! The ultimate string theory that should be connected to strings, M theory should have strings, but does not seem to need them. Its fairy tale universe? Ha Ha Ha!!! You've been had! hook line and sinker...
I've sussed it out, I've got Pinocchio, and he at the moment belongs to me, it so unbelievable that I am not going to even explain it. All I can say is, Pinocchio is nothing but a piece of wood without the imaginary potential to make him real. The best you can do in the universe is to take what you know as real, turn it in the imaginary, improve it; and then make it real again. Good Luck! For those that don’t believe in luck, you'll just have to create your own.
